Alexander was married after banns by Jacob Bullock (minister); Alexander and Philippa both signed the register with a mark. The marriage was in the presence of John Old and John Jago, parish clerk.John Old is the husband of Margaret Guy, who is the sister of Philippa's deceased husband.
The IGI shows her as Phillipa Gay marrying Alexander Ripper 27 July 1771.
The parish register entry is dated 27th July 1769 and shows her as a widow.
At her marriage to John Guy she is recorded as Phillipa Bastowe of Gluvias.
A search for her baptism and parents has been fruitless to date.
The children of Philippa and her first husband, John Guy, are:
* Mary Guy - baptised 29 July 1759 at St Gluvias
* John Guy - baptised 20 February 1763 at Helston
* William Guy - baptised 11 Aug 1765 at Helston. At the time of her marriage to Alexander in 1769, Philippa is described as being a widow. The death of her husband in the intervening has not been traced. It is possible that the children, particularly the youngest one could well have been brought up as a Repper or Ripper, being only four years of age at the time of her second marriage.
The fact that there is a John Guy and his wife Anne having their son baptised in Helston on 4 Aug 1793 could negate this argument. It must be borne in mind that Philippa died in 1794.
Mrs B Swinburne of Flat 2, 8 Violet Close, Hackbridge, Surrey, SM6 7HH has written in response to my letter sent after seeing her request for Bastow & Tregonning connections in Hackney and Stoke Newington. She is looking for Selina Bastow marrying Cyrus Tregonning on 28 July 1873 at Stoke Newington. (4/6/1995)
Ann receives frequent mention in her mother's declarations to the Hampstead Poor Relief Guardians.
Searching the Hampstead St John's marriage registers up to 1842 has not revealed her marriage, if she ever married there.
The burial registers have not revealed her burial up to 1842.
In St Luke's, Chelsea in 1821 there is the baptism of William, son of Ann Repper and John Burton, whose residence is the poorhouse (BB).
William's burial record shows him as being about 6 weeks old upon death.
