Charles Dillard "Charlie" MARTIN

Charlie clerked in Hico, Hamilton Co., TX, where he met & married his wife.
Both of them were active in the Morgan Baptist Church.  He was partners with
his brother Sam in Martin Brothers Dry Goods and Shoe House, Morgan, Bosque
Co., TX, which was the largest store in the county, stocking everything but
drugs & hardware.  Trips to market were made twice a year to St. Louis,
Missouri.  The firm employed Claude, brother to Charlie & Sam, as bookkeeper.
    Charlie ran the merchandise store & bought cotton & grain throughout
Bosque & Hamilton counties & surrounding areas; he ordered & shipped grain for
export direct on boxcars from Morgan to Galveston.  Sam, in turn, operated the
livestock & rances.  Martin Bros. were the first Polled Hereford cattle breeder
in Bosque County;  they also bought & sold properties & oil leases & royalties
& were officers & board members of the Morgan First National Bank.
    Charlie & Sam dissolved partnership as their children matured.  Charlie
took the Benham place, north of Morgan.  Sam took the Daniel's place on Steele
Creek, now owned by George Watson, & the ranch east of town along Mesquite
Creek, now owned by O. E. Mullins.


Alice KERSEY

Alice was an 1892 graduate of Baylor College in Belton, Bell Co., TX.  She
taught school in Hico, Hamilton Co., TX. She  & Charlie were active in the
Morgan Baptist Church; she was in the Order of the Eastern Star & was a charter
member of the Morgan Womens Federated Literary Club.


Ella Wilhelmina ROEBER

   Grandmother Ella attended the Univ. of Texas at Austin, was a prominent
young lady in society circles in Morgan prior to ther marriage & afterwards, was a member of the OES, & was a charter member of the Morgan Federated Women's Literary Club.  Both Ella & Sam were active members in the Morgan Baptist Church.
