Notes

John Tucker MARTIN

Sent by Valeska Vicars.  S/o Abraham Martin.  John served in the 26th Miss., in Civil War and was wounded at Ft. Donaldson.

   CSA/26th Mississippi Unit/wounded at Ft. Donaldson/Confederate soldier.
John's parents were born in Virginia.  When John was fourteen, the family
started to Texas.  In Alabama a horse kicked & killed his father, Abram, & John had to assume the responsibility as head of the family; they came on to Miss.

Religion: At the age of sixteen John joined the Missionary Baptist Church,
giving nearly sixty years' service to the Lord.
Cemetery: John bought the lot in the Morgan Cemetery for himself, his wife,
their eight surviving children and their spouses.

Move: After marriage, John & Eliz. moved to Meridian, Miss. where their first
child, Charles Dilliard Martin, was born, Oct. 29, 1870.  By 1872 they had moved to Robertson County, Texas, where their second child, Samuel Monroe Martin (my granddad), was born on Nov. 26, 1872.  By 1875 they had moved to Brazos County, near the edge of Bryan, Texas; five more children were born there.  Around 1883 the family moved to Bosque County, settling on a farm just south of Morgan, Texas; their last child was born in Morgan.  Two other children were born, but I do not know where the family was living at the births & their deaths.
One of the early landmarks in Bosque County was the artesian well on the
John Tucker Martin farm, about two miles south-east of town; it flowed freely
more than fifty years.  John raised ribbon cane, which he milled into syrup.
Cliff (Martin) Sowell, his granddaughter, remembers her father, Claude, talking about the farm, the cold morning chores, & warming himself by the fireplace after milking the cow.  Margaret (Martin) Fensty, John's granddaughter, remembers the manner in which the acreage of the home place on Steele Creek was determined.  A rag was tied onto the buggy wheel; my grandfather, Sam, sat next to the wheel at the rear of the wagon as it was driven around the perimeter of the farm, counting the number of times the rag hit the ground.  Upon finishing the route, they measured the wheel & multiplied that figure by the number Sam had counted.
Margaret also remembers her grandfather as a quiet, plain-spoken, smart,
energetic man who enjoyed teasing his grandchildren.  John died at his Morgan
home, surrounded by his wife, children & loving friends, & funeral services
were held in the home.  About two years prior he had suffered injuries in a
farm accident & never fully recovered.  His span of mules ran away, overturning the hay wagon which they were pulling;  yet, he refused to ride in a gasoline "buggy" because he was afraid that it would explode.
