From Spike Family geneaology forum: The first Spike in England was William Spech or Guillaume Espec (Valiant Soldier of the Conqueror) he was granted land in Bedford County by William I (See Domesday Book Co. Beds. landowner #25). His only son some say nephew, Walter Espech of Hemsley died 1153 without issue and Walter's three sisters (Hawise, Adeline, & Albrade and their heirs) inherited. Even though the Espech's of Yorkshire may have left no heirs, the Normandy branch may have sent over more family members. The Speke's of Jordons and Rowlands Co. Devon trace to Richard Espec, a contemporary of Walter Espec. In the Bedfordshire Eyre oof 1202 AD is ref. to a David Espec
In a royal charter of HenryI 1126 is mentioned a Ranulf Especk
Pipe rolls of Henry II reveal an Osbert (Osbertos) Speke/Spech in Sussex in the years1220, 1221, 1222The exact Norman origins of the name are unknown. One theory suggests Quesni (old name was Kesnoi-Espec) near St. Etieene de la Taillial, Auge-known to have been held by a family named Espec. Lands in Herpaiz-Mesnil were held by the sons of Renouf Espec.
Alternative theory: the neighborhood of St. Martin d'Augigny. In early recordings of the name Esp and Sp were used interchangeably. Name seems to be rooted in the French word for woodpecker.
Yorkshire Hundred Rolls have two references 1275 p. 73 City of York..."One windmill and 2 qac of land next to St. hame's chapel in the suburb were William le Espec's who los the in Jewry.
p. 75. concerning sheriff's and bailiffs, "they say that John son of John le Speck, Clement de POnte and John de Sutton bailiffs of York..."It seems probable that the Spike family descended from these Normans, but to prove it?
"My ancester Bryan Spike b. 1774-originated in the Flamborough/Bempton/Humany area of the East Riding Yorkshire." Valerie
