Vera Eliza Murray married George Edward Ziegenmeyer 31 January 1912 in Grinnell Iowa, Powshiek County, Iowa, and they had three children, Carol, Dorothy, and William. After George died in 1924 when they were farming in Minnesota, Vera returned to Grinnell, Iowa with the children. She found a large house where she could accommodate boarders and made a living for herself and the children, refusing help from her parents.
(Memories of Aunt Vera by Mrs. Ruth Ziegenmeyer Lewis)
"My Aunt and Uncle, Dorette and Otto Wiekhorst, took my mother Ethel and my baby brother Leonard and me to visit when I was quite young, about 1928. I remember the trip from St. Louis to Grinnell in Uncle Otto's Model A Ford. There were many detours on the Iowa roads. My mother used to say the moon shone in every window during the night. There were several stops to change a flat tire, and it was a long night till we arrived in Grinnell about 2 am. Then we couldn't find the house- no street signs- and we wandered the streets quite a while until a deputy in the silent town found us and took us to Aunt Vera's house on Broad Street. Names of streets were painted on the curbs! Later I remember Aunt Vera lived on High Street just off the Highway 6 and near Grinnell College. She still had boarders and also was caterer at her nearby Methodist Church. The Murrays lived only a block or so away and my recollection is of a big house."
